                  metaphor-reenvisioning-therapy-women-color

The psychosocial realities faced by Women of Color in the United States are daunting. Long stereotyped as “strong” and “sassy,” Women of Color shoulder the weight of others’ burdens, compromising their emotional well-being. They are overworked and underpaid, are more likely to be single parents, are at higher risk for intimate partner and community violence, and are underserved in mental health and substance abuse services. Moreover, Women of Color face a daily onslaught of disrespect, denigration, and microaggressions in our racist, patriarchal, and misogynistic culture. Acknowledging and addressing these realities requires practitioners to systematically analyze Women of Color’s oppressions and liberation processes from a Black feminist perspective, informed by politics, race, and sexual and gender identity.

This unique and unapologetic book vividly explores the complex mental health experiences of Women of Color and gives therapists and educators a deeper understanding of the complex problems that Women of Color bring into treatment. With the goal of assisting therapists in developing foundational culturally responsive intervention skills, Lani V. Jones presents key elements and proficiencies critical to Black feminist therapeutic philosophy, theory, and practice.

Through numerous anecdotes and case studies, Jones takes a person-centered, politically informed perspective that positions therapy within a cultural context, privileging race, gender, sexuality, and so on. She also provides insight into key paradigm shifts, such as moving the field from deficit models of psychosocial competence to culturally relevant methods that focus on resilience, strengths, and spirituality.

                  metaphor-analysis-public-policy-and-private-practice

In this time of unparalleled partisanship and negativity, it is impossible to ignore the prevalence and impact of metaphors in the news, politics, and social media. Welfare recipients are “parasites” who “breed” too many children. Those who are in the justice system are “monsters” and “animals” to be feared. Immigrants are “illegals” who are “flooding” our borders. The “War on Drugs” ensures those with addiction are the enemy. When these negative perspectives or feelings are part of the public discourse, they adversely affect marginalized populations and reinforce public policies that oppress and disparage such groups. Furthermore, they can discourage people who care the most—including social workers—to disengage from public discourse.

In this unique and important work, O’Brien encourages the reader to educate, engage, and make the connection between individual work and policy. Focusing on the emotionally charged issues associated with social work, he shows the reader how metaphors are used to oversimplify complex issues like poverty, immigration, and mental health. He demonstrates how the overt and covert use of dehumanization, objectification, “positive” stereotyping, and fear- and disgust-based metaphors shape public opinion and policy and can damage an individual’s self-worth and perception.

It is essential for social workers and allies of social justice to understand public discourse metaphors if they are to advocate for and treat the vulnerable and oppressed populations that they serve. Engaging at this level helps social workers live up to the code of ethics of the profession, whether they work in public policy, institutions, or private practice.

Poverty and financial insecurity can have devastating consequences to one’s physical and mental health, even threatening basic survival. During these challenging economic times, social workers have an opportunity to empower those at risk. Starting with a discussion of poverty and relevant global social policies, the book explores how economic distress exacerbates already stressful situations, and how those challenges surface in clinical practice. The ensuing chapters examine poverty and its impact on children and adolescents, older adults, adults with disabilities, veterans, immigrants, and other vulnerable groups.

Strengths-based interventions can be a powerful antidote to the destructive forces of poverty and adversity, and ultimately lead to resource mobilization and empowerment. Through case studies and active learning exercises, students can practice applying the skills they have learned in each chapter.

In this book, Jackson and Samuels draw from their own research and direct practice with multiracial individuals and families, and also a rich interdisciplinary science and theory base, to share their model of multiracial cultural attunement. Core to this model are the four foundational principles of critical multiraciality, multidimensionality and intersectionality, social constructivism, and social justice. Throughout, the authors demonstrate how to collaboratively nurture clients’ emerging identities, identify struggles and opportunities, and deeply engage clients’ strengths and resiliencies. Readers are challenged to embrace this model as a guide to go beyond the comfort zone of their own racialized experiences to disrupt the stigma and systems of racism and monoracism that can inhibit the well-being of multiracial people and families.

With case studies, skill-building resources, tool kits, and interactive exercises, this book can help you leverage the strengths and resilience of multiracial people and families and pave the way to your own personal growth and professional responsibility to enact socially just practices.

Research shows that meditation—in all its various forms—can have a positive impact on both our physical and mental health. When combined with psychotherapy, meditation can reduce anxiety, stress, depression, and burnout and improve heart health, sleep, concentration, performance, and overall sense of well-being.

Ray Scurfield demonstrates how to introduce meditation into treatment for clients with posttraumatic stress disorder or everyday stress. His 12-step method includes selecting a meditation technique that is best suited for the client, preparing for physical challenges during meditation, focusing on breathing, anticipating inner and outer distractions, practicing together during sessions, and helping clients create a meditation routine. Through meditation, this unique work encourages therapists to provide a safe space for their clients to experiment with their own healing; generate solutions that mesh with their belief systems; and engage in ways of thinking, acting, and doing that promote health, responsibility, and change.

Stephen Marson has spent over 40 years as a practicing social work gerontologist, studying the sociological theories for suicide intervention of elderly clients. Ultimately, Marson determined that Emile Durkheim’s theory of suicide was the perfect fit for understanding suicidal distress in the elderly. Rather than focusing on psychological diagnoses, he uses Durkheim’s theory to identify fatalistic, anomic, egoistic, and altruistic environmental circumstances that create suicide potential.

Marson addresses these four dimensions, and explores the gerontological research and social history that illustrate the evidence. He then presents various intervention strategies that will help practitioners to identify social factors (for example, age, gender, education, and marriage) that provide clues into the potentially suicidal patient and establish an intervention strategy to address suicide based on the social environment.

                  Reproductive Decision Making

Social workers face complex societal issues that often seem insurmountable. Pulled in many directions, sustainable progress can seem impossible. To help focus on what matters most, the American Academy for Social Work and Social Welfare has recently set out 12 grand challenges for social work and society, in three broad categories of individual and family well-being, social fabric, and social justice.

Social workers must strive toward social progress in these categories by relying on evidence-based methods, and the compendium of articles presented in this book highlights scholarship that provides a research base to address health disparities, social isolation, and financial capability, among others. Edited by the recent editors in chief of four NASW Press journals, Social Work, justssr安卓下载, Children & Schools, and Social Work Research, this book is intended to be a primary resource for social work researchers, practitioners, policymakers, faculty, and students. Grand Challenges for Society not only provides the most up-to-date research, but also alerts the field to gaps in the literature that still need to be explored to achieve the aims of the Grand Challenges for Social Work.

“The editors of this book have carefully identified a collection of important articles within their respective journals that speak to social work practice methods for addressing many contemporary and future social welfare issues. It is sure to generate thought-provoking approaches to social welfare issues and new lines of inquiry.”

Social work professionals are uniquely positioned to discuss reproductive decision making (RDM) with their clients. However, social workers often find it difficult to address topics such as family planning in their practice. Reproductive Decision Making is a brief guide providing RDM tools and strategies for busy social workers. Grounded in social cognitive theory and the theory of planned behavior, this book uses case examples based on real-world research and situations to connect readers with the material, emphasizing patient-centered approaches that prioritize client self-determination. By filling an important gap in available resources for practitioners, this book will improve social workers’ confidence in providing RDM guidance and advocacy.

The authors describe model programs and the effects of various care arrangements, demonstrating how different types of settings can influence outcomes and benefit certain groups of children. International approaches are analyzed, providing more insight into potential areas for domestic reform. In the final chapter, recent early childhood education and care debates are discussed through a social work lens.

In Engaging Human Services with Evidence-Informed Practice, Debbie Plath outlines five phases of an organizational approach to implementing EIP. She guides readers through the development of practice questions; the gathering, critical appraisal, and integration of evidence; and client outcome monitoring and evaluation. Plath emphasizes that implementing EIP is a nonlinear process that unfolds in complex organizational landscapes and cultures. Throughout the process, special attention should be paid to relationship building, strong leadership, and stakeholder engagement. Plath’s model is adaptable to a wide variety of human services organizations and can work in conjunction with clinical decision-making models, empirically supported standardized interventions, practice research methodology, and the development of best practice guidelines.

The book begins by detailing historical violations of the sexual and reproductive rights of people with disabilities, including forced castration and sterilization. It then explores current issues of sexuality and disability throughout the life course, starting with childhood and adolescence. The authors examine the increased risk of abuse and victimization that people with disabilities face while in romantic or sexual relationships and provide practice recommendations to help combat factors that contribute to this vulnerability. Other milestones across the life course are also explored, such as pregnancy and parenting, marriage and cohabitation, and intimacy in older adulthood. Throughout the book, the authors examine the micro, meso, and macro systems that affect the lives and relationships of people with disabilities.
